Festival of Flight Returns to Long Beach Airport with Sky-High Community Spirit

A Long Beach Tradition Takes Flight Again

Each fall, the Festival of Flight transforms Long Beach Airport into one of the most accessible aviation showcases in Southern California. On Saturday, October 25, the city’s signature community event returns with free admission, family-friendly exhibits, and a full day of live entertainment beneath the roar of aircraft engines and the buzz of local pride.

The open-air festival, held directly on the airport’s tarmac, is designed to celebrate Long Beach’s aviation history—from its World War II production legacy to today’s commercial and private flight operations. It’s part airshow, part community fair, and all heart. Residents young and old gather to touch aircraft, talk with pilots, and feel the unique energy that has kept aviation central to the city’s identity for nearly a century.

Static Aircraft Displays and Behind-the-Scenes Access

Visitors can walk right up to a variety of aircraft—from private planes and helicopters to military transports and modern jets. Unlike a traditional air show, this event keeps the focus on exploration rather than performance. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, meet flight crews, and even climb aboard select aircraft for photos and demonstrations.

The airport’s airfield will be lined with static displays representing both Long Beach’s aviation heritage and its ongoing contributions to aerospace innovation. Expect appearances from the California National Guard, law enforcement units, and local aviation schools—all eager to share what makes flight both thrilling and accessible.

Live Music, Food, and Kids’ Activities Ground the Fun

While aircraft may steal the spotlight, the festival’s energy extends far beyond the runway. Live music fills the air throughout the day, with performances from local bands and community groups. A lineup of food trucks serves everything from tacos and BBQ to vegan fare, while kids’ zones keep younger visitors entertained with crafts, interactive science exhibits, and aviation-themed games.

Long Beach Airport’s event planners emphasize that the Festival of Flight is not just about aviation—it’s about connection. It’s a chance for residents to rediscover an iconic city landmark and experience firsthand how a working airport operates behind the scenes. Each year, thousands of visitors leave with a new appreciation for the people who keep Long Beach flying.

Why the Festival Matters to Long Beach

The Festival of Flight has become a cornerstone of Long Beach’s civic calendar because it blends education, history, and entertainment in one dynamic setting. It reflects the same spirit that built the Douglas Aircraft Company and continues through the airport’s sustainable modernization projects today. For families, it’s a rare opportunity to get close to the aircraft they watch overhead every day—and to experience the wonder of flight without leaving the ground.

In a city known for both innovation and neighborhood pride, the Festival of Flight captures what makes Long Beach unique: a small-town sense of community paired with world-class aviation roots.
