Viva la Vida – Día de los Muertos 5K/10K/Half Marathon

Long Beach Run Honors Life with Coastal Tradition

Step into the rhythm of community and remembrance this fall as Long Beach hosts the “Viva la Vida – Día de los Muertos 5K/10K/Half Marathon” on Sunday, November 2, 2025. Held along the city’s scenic coastal path, this festive event invites runners and walkers of all skill levels to celebrate Día de los Muertos in motion.

Whether you're racing in memory of a loved one or simply joining for the joy of the run, Viva la Vida promises more than miles—it’s a tribute to life, culture, and collective spirit.

Celebrate Life, Honor Tradition

From the first steps along Ocean Boulevard, participants are welcomed into a colorful, vibrant celebration rooted in tradition. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, honors ancestors and departed friends—but in Long Beach, it’s also a joyful occasion to gather, move, and connect.

Expect to see costumes, painted faces, and tributes tucked into running gear. The energy is light, inclusive, and steeped in meaning. Whether you're pushing for a PR or pacing with friends, this race makes space for memory and movement.

What to Expect on Race Day

This year's event features three distances—5K, 10K, and a Half Marathon—beginning bright and early along Long Beach’s eastern coastline. The half marathon kicks off around 7:00 AM, while the 5K and 10K begin near 7:30 AM.

All races start and finish near 5400 E Ocean Blvd, just steps from the sand and sea. Participants are encouraged to wear Día de los Muertos–themed costumes and honor loved ones as part of the celebration. The course is flat, fast, and stroller-friendly, making it ideal for both seasoned runners and casual participants.

Registration is required and available online. Entry fees vary by race and date of signup, with full event details and updates provided through the official registration page.

Why Long Beach Runs With Heart

Few events merge fitness and culture like Viva la Vida. For Long Beach locals and visitors alike, it offers a space to reflect while staying active. In a city that thrives on outdoor living and diverse traditions, this run serves as a heartbeat of the community.

You'll hear laughter, spot altars and memorial bibs, and feel the warmth of unity among strangers. Whether you're sprinting, strolling, or cheering from the sidelines, there's power in showing up.

Tips for a Meaningful Morning

  • Arrive early for parking and warm-up (especially for half marathoners)
  • Embrace the theme—costumes, face paint, flowers, and all
  • Bring hydration and layer clothing for early November coastal temps
  • Most importantly, carry a name or memory with you—it’s part of the purpose
