Adopt-A-Chick Program Wraps Up Spring Run in Long Beach Classrooms

A hands-on learning experience brought live chicks and life science lessons to local students this season

A local education program that brought live chicks into classrooms across Long Beach has just wrapped up its spring run, giving students a rare, hands-on look at early life and animal behavior.

How the Adopt-A-Chick Program Works in Long Beach Classrooms

Organized by Ground Education, the Adopt-A-Chick program is designed to introduce students to the chick lifecycle through direct interaction. Instead of learning from textbooks alone, students were able to observe, hold, and care for newly hatched chicks while exploring topics like animal adaptations, ecosystems, and basic life science.

The program reached students in grades such as TK, Kindergarten, and fifth grade, offering an experience that many may not encounter otherwise. For some, it was their first time interacting with a live animal in an educational setting, turning a typical classroom lesson into something more memorable.

From Marina Farmers Market Kickoff to Community Support

Alongside the classroom component, the organization also hosted a public kickoff earlier this month at the Marina Farmers Market, where community members had the chance to meet the chicks and take part in the program through a symbolic adoption that supports future classroom visits.

That connection between classroom learning and community participation helps extend the program beyond school walls, giving residents a way to support hands-on education in a direct and visible way.

Why Programs Like This Matter for Local Students

Caring for the chicks requires time, coordination, and resources from the Ground Education team, and community support plays a role in keeping the program active each year. The effort helps ensure that students continue to have access to interactive learning experiences that connect them more directly to the natural world.

With this year’s program now complete, the Adopt-A-Chick experience is expected to return next spring, continuing its role as a small but meaningful part of local classroom learning.
