Knolloween Invites Bixby Knolls Neighbors to Share a Little Halloween Spirit |
A Bowl of Candy and a Hello Bring the Neighborhood Together |

A bowl of candy and a hello. That’s enough to take part in Knolloween, a neighborhood Halloween project from Bixby Knolls Commons. While the towering skeletons and haunted yards are welcome, there’s also room for a paper ghost in an apartment window and a neighbor happy to answer the door.
Throughout October, residents can add their places to a shared Halloween map, show what they’ve created and let families know whether they’ll welcome trick-or-treaters on Saturday, October 31. The idea is to help children enjoy Halloween close to home while getting to know a few more people on their block.
“You shouldn’t need a twelve-foot skeleton to make a kid’s night,” said Joe Hayden, Founding Neighbor & Commons Director. “A bowl of candy and being glad they showed up can do it. We want kids to feel that welcome in their own neighborhood and to recognize a few more people the next time they walk down the block.”
A Little Creativity, a Chance to Connect
The map makes room for homes, apartment windows, shops and shared gathering places. Households can also indicate that they’re handing out candy without putting up a display.
For neighbors who enjoy a little friendly competition, October brings contests for decorated places, pumpkins, costumes and pets. Voting stays open through November 2. A small Commons jury will also award the Supreme Relic to a place that reflects Knolloween’s spirit through imagination and welcome. Neighbors and businesses can contribute prizes, too.
The project has roots in Lights on Falcon, the neighborhood light-and-music display created by Hayden and his partner, Chris Payne. According to the Commons, visitors have asked over the years how to bring that same feeling of connection to their own blocks. Knolloween offers a way to start with something people already enjoy.
Bixby Knolls Commons describes itself as an independent neighborhood association and an initiative of LightLab Community Arts Foundation. Its work brings neighbors together through shared traditions, practical care and useful information, with renters, homeowners, newcomers and longtime residents welcome.
Find Your Way Around Knolloween
Knolloween is a collection of participating places and activities across the neighborhood throughout October. Each location sets its own hours, so families should check the map listings before heading out. A decorated home doesn’t necessarily mean candy will be available.
