There will be waterslides, costumes, trick or treating and entertainment at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center on Saturday, October 3. But behind the activities is a much bigger reason for bringing the community together.
Harvest for Hope is a Relay For Life event supporting the American Cancer Society and the people and families whose lives have been touched by cancer.
The free community event begins at 9 a.m. with a Survivor Breakfast, followed by an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. From there, the day turns into a fall celebration with entertainment, team fundraising booths, trick or treating, a costume parade and a canned food drive.
Waterslides will also be available from noon to 4 p.m. for $5 for guests 48 inches and taller.
More Than a Day of Relay For Life Fundraising
For more than 40 years, communities have gathered through Relay For Life to celebrate cancer survivors, recognize caregivers, remember loved ones and raise money to help people facing cancer.
The American Cancer Society describes Relay For Life as a volunteer powered movement. Today, Relay For Life events take place in nearly 1,000 communities nationwide, with survivors, caregivers, families, friends and volunteers joining together to support the cause.
Although individual Relay events can reflect the personality of their communities, they share four signature elements: celebrating survivors, celebrating caregivers, remembering loved ones through a luminaria ceremony and taking action in the fight against cancer.
Harvest for Hope brings those traditions together with an event designed for the entire family.
Children can trick or treat beginning at 2:30 p.m., followed by a costume parade at 5 p.m. Entertainment and team fundraising activities will continue throughout the day.
When the Relay For Life Celebration Turns to Remembrance
As the sun begins to set, the event will take a quieter turn with a Luminaria Slide Show at dusk.
The luminaria tradition is an important part of Relay For Life. It is a time to honor and remember loved ones, bringing a different meaning to a day that has also been filled with celebration and family activities.
That combination of celebration and remembrance is at the heart of Relay For Life. Survivors are recognized for their journeys, caregivers for the support they provide, and loved ones who have died from cancer are remembered.
Helping the Fight Against Cancer Continue Beyond One Day
The money raised through Relay For Life supports the broader mission of the American Cancer Society.
According to the organization, funds help support cancer research, advocacy and patient support. The American Cancer Society also provides information and education about cancer prevention, early detection and treatment options.
For the people gathering in La Mirada, Harvest for Hope offers a way to contribute while spending a Saturday together.
There will be food, costumes, waterslides and entertainment. There will also be survivors beginning the morning together over breakfast and, at the end of the day, a community pausing at dusk to remember why they came.
